This group exhibition of seven artists hailing from various locales explores a type of realism that, for better or worse, is a part of all of our lives. That realism is embarrassment. This emotion is a reality that, though we often try to deny and distance ourselves from it, remains very much a part of the human experience. In exploring thematic possibilities, an exhibit based in authenticity became the focus. Embarrassment serves as that subject-matter that can be easily relatable across groups and brings to light things that are all too often kept secret or most certainly played down. Here is an opportunity to present to the public, as well as to our own egos, a moment of reflection on said matter—a look in the mirror, so to speak. The collection of works offers an opportunity to laugh, sigh, cringe, and maybe most importantly, to find solidarity in the “misfortune” of others. In our moments of stupidity, mistakes, and unfortunate circumstances, we feel isolated as we desperately look for a red herring to deliver us from the depths of our insecurities. While we often feel those awkward moments so intensely, it is the sense of self-preservation for the personae we have constructed for ourselves, families, friends, and the public, that drives us to recover. This intensity may wreck and/or temper us at times, but it certainly plays a role in shaping us. Recognizing that we are of an age when image can, and sometimes does, mean everything, we are, after all, only human and destined for moments that, even if not mocked by others, will certainly leave a haunting mark on the tragedian. So, it is then, that out of a quest for something real and honest, we arrive at the topic of embarrassment. The show provides a moment of honesty and solidarity. But please do not touch the art! It could be embarrassing if the guards yell at you.
